Internship Fees
Students are required to pay a Program Fee, which covers the expenses of the internship program. The Program Fee covers the following items:
  • Pre-departure support
  • Orientation Packet
  • Lodging in Ghana
  • In-country volunteer support
  • Project-related expenses
One goal of Women in Progress is to keep our student internship program affordable so that more students are able to take advantage of this great experience and help a greater number of women entrepreneurs in Ghana. To keep the overall cost down, students are responsible for obtaining various items before departure. Women in Progress will provide assistance as needed to help the student in obtaining the following items
  • Travel medical insurance (including emergency evacuation coverage)
  • Visa to Ghana
  • Required vaccinations
  • Airline ticket
In an effort to keep the internship program flexible enough to cover the needs and wants of all types of participants, students are responsible for covering the cost of food and in-country ground transportation during their stay. Depending on one's level of required comfort, food and transport can be as little as s few dollars a day. That is up to the student to decide.

To help in Planning Your Budget we have provided some price estimates of what to expect to pay for various items once you have arrived in Ghana.

Interested in doing an internship but need help in raising funds? Fundraising can be a great way to raise enough money to cover the Program Fee. Women in Progress has created a Fundraising Kit to assist you in this endeavor.

Tax Deductions
Women in Progress is a tax exempt organization and as such is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The Program Fee paid to Women in Progress is tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers. Any funds raised by you from another organization or individual to cover the Program Fee is tax deductible by that organization or individual. If you paid for trip-related expenses out of your own pocket, you can take a tax deduction for your airfare, local transport costs, lodging, and food as you are performing services for a charitable organization. Bear in mind that the U.S. IRS allows such deductions only if "there is no significant element of pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel."

Interns from other countries should contact their tax accountants to know whether the Program Fee paid to Women in Progress is tax deductible in your home country.

Departure Dates
Women in Progress internship programs operate year round in Ghana. Students arrive monthly in Accra and go through the in-country orientation with other incoming volunteers and interns. Internships can last from 2 weeks to 4 months, depending on your personal timeline and academic requirements:
  • Summer internship
