Volunteer

Vacation
Tsehay with more of her kids from her pre-school class at the orphanage.

Description: (Elmina, Ghana. Oct 2004 – Jan 2005) Women in Progress is a supporter of the OOEIM Orphanage located outside of Elmina. They are in need of donations and volunteers to keep the orphanage running smoothly. When Tsehay contacted WIP about her interest in working with children in Ghana, WIP couldn't think of a better match. WIP was also hoping to implement a strict quality control process for the production of the Global Mamas product line.

Achievements: Tsehay applied her skills in such varied ways in Ghana. She was able to fulfill her dream of immersing herself in a new culture to assist children and women and at the same time helped WIP to improve its own organizational capacity:
  • Assisted Gifty at the OOEIM Orphanage in teaching the pre-school kids in the mornings.
  • Interviewed several seamstresses and batikers to gain information about the Global Mamas production process and then worked with WIP's staff to initiate a quality control program.
  • Taught Kukwa computer lesson in her spare time.
  • Creating lasting friendships with the other volunteers at the roof top –where much soul searching and discussion were conducted after supper every day.
Highlights: Tsehay's highlight was seeing the faces of the women when they saw their pictures and interviews on the Global Mamas web site for the first time. She also loved helping to sell products in the Global mama store and teaching computers to one of the women and seeing how fascinated she was with the whole experience!

"It's nice to be nice! I quit my job as a Quality Control Chemist to look for something my soul was craving – to be part of a different culture and society and help kids and women. I got what I was looking for."
