Leimer working with the women in the Krobo bead assembly cooperative.

Description: (Odumase-Krobo, Ghana. Mar 2008) The Ghanaian managers of the Krobo Bead Center, Gladys and Thomas, were in the early stages of testing out a new model for producing their beaded products that would be set up as a private business called the Fair Trade Center. Women In Progress wanted to assist in the establishment of the center to ensure it would generate enough revenue to sustain and grow itself.

Achievements: Leimer assisted WIP in many aspects of the early stages of establishing the Fair Trade Center, including:
  • Creating an electronic version of their daily transaction book.
  • Creating an application form.
  • Creating a list of interview questions.
  • Re-structuring the hiring & training process.
  • Researching labor laws to see the conditions that would apply once the center becomes an independent registered business.
Highlights: Leimer said that seeing how the beads were made from the very first step was a great surprise and simply stunning.

"The last day of my trip at the center I wanted to give some token of appreciation for all the things that the women taught me without realizing they were, so I decided to treat all of them for lunch. They were really grateful, but I was even more so and wished that I could have done more to show them how thankful I was."
