Gifty Dorkenu, who is in the fish smoking & packaging business, learns how to write a letter on the computer.

Description: (Cape Coast, Ghana. Jun - Jul 2003) Most of the entrepreneurs that Women in Progress assist have less than the equivalent of a junior high school education. Nicola took on the challenging, yet rewarding task of introducing these women to computers for the very first time so that they could learn how to utilize technology within their businesses.

Accomplishments: Nicola made a difference through the following activities:
  • Tutored 8 women in the basics of computer usage.
  • Helped the owners of Eli-Emma Batik & Tye-Dye set up a simple record-keeping system.
  • Developed a basic curriculum for computer basics (keyboarding, word processing, etc.)
Highlights: Nicola loved teaching women to use the computer. Even though it will take a long time for them to get confident, comfortable and savvy, she got to watch these fantastic women discover something that can be scary and forbidding.

"The women whom I worked with were just so kind and endearing and I am grateful that I had the chance to know them. I also really appreciate the respect with which I was treated, and that Women in Progress trusted me to handle my own projects."
