Description: Women in Progress was seeking assistance to better market its activities and products on the website and to gain more publicity. Optimizing the website to improve search engine rankings was a high priority as the Global Mamas site had been launched, but few new customers were coming to the site. WIP also had many successes with a small revolving loan fund as a result of a grant from the British High Commission, and was hoping to submit proposals to other funding agencies in order to expand the raw materials revolving loan fund that reduces the cost of production for the women producing Global Mamas products.

Achievements: With Megan's strong PR and communications skills, she was able to assist Women in Progress in numerous areas:
  • Took photos and wrote the content for the new Handcrafting section of the Global Mamas website that gives detailed instructions on how to batik and how to tie-dye.
  • Optimized the website text for many of the Global Mamas product pages based on keyword phrases strategically chosen to gain high search engine rankings.
  • Interviewed several of the new Global Mamas, wrote new profiles on the women, and took photos that were used on the Meet the Women section of the Global Mamas website.
  • Updated the "look" of WIP's Quarterly Updates and composed the recent updates that were published on the website and sent to WIP donors and Global Mamas retailers.
  • Gathered quotes from almost most of the women on what they would like to say to their US customers buying their Global Mamas products.
  • Took the lead in writing proposals to expand WIP's revolving loan fund geared towards local funding organizations.
  • Wrote a profile on Kristin Johnson, WIP co-founder, which was published in a Minnesota Monthly.
  • Created talking points for a Global Mamas advertisement that was used to produce a radio ad by Radio Disney with the help of a former WIP volunteer, Marne Petersen.
  • Drafted a PR plan for WIP that will be carried out by a PR intern summer 2005.
Highlights: Megan had a wonderful time meeting the women of Global Mamas and witnessing their accomplishments – expanding their businesses, moving to new shops, and sending their kids back to school. She was grateful to be able to get out of my stressful life in Washington and unwind in Ghana – a great place to just slow down, clear your head, and have no worries about deadlines and the future.
