Vacation

Description: Rachel arrived in Ghana as Women in Progress was getting ready to launch Global Mamas to sell apparel and accessories via the Internet. WIP needed help with blending its website design with the design of the product tags and the sales kits to be used for wholesale orders in the US. In addition, a restaurant owned by a woman in Cape Coast was seeking assistance in revising her menu.

Achievements: With graphic design skills being in high demand, Rachel kept extremely busy and achieved many things during her stay in Ghana:
  • Helped Josephine, the owner of Styles Hometouch Restaurant, revise her pricing strategy, consolidate her food offering, and design a fantastic new menu for the restaurant.
  • Created a template for the new WIP Quarterly Updates (Newsletters) and worked with another volunteer, Sam, and the women to generate the Spring and Summer Updates.
  • Designed the Global Mamas tags to be used on products having Adinkra symbols.
  • Designed the Peace Corps t-shirts that WIP batiked and sold at the National Peace Corps Conference in Chicago over the summer.
  • Designed an incredible Sales Kit that WIP will use in marketing the Global Mamas products to retailers in the US.
Highlights: The most satisfying part of Rachel's experience was living with her host family, the Kwaw's, and feeling like she was part of their family for two months. They were very accepting, made her feel at home, and kept her eating excellent Ghanaian dishes! Jumping rope with Kojo and the girls downstairs and discussing life as a Ghanaian teen with Desmond and Erasmus—those are some of her most satisfying memories.
