Vacation
Brittany dyes cloth that she has designed for the new Global Mamas maternity line.

Description: Women in Progress has been focused on launching its new Global Mamas apparel line. Thinking of the future, WIP wanted to begin the planning stages for new products such as a maternity line and home décor items. In addition, WIP was getting ready to open a new international trade channel closer to home by launching a Global Mamas store in Cape Coast targeted to tourists.

Accomplishments: Brittany, working in partnership with another classmate, made significant headway in product development for Global Mamas:
  • Developed and co-facilitated a Pricing Basics workshops that conveyed to the women producing the Global Mamas product line simple formulas for pricing a the manufacturing, wholesale and retail levels.
  • Developed several new designs for a new maternity line—including taking a hands-on role in batiking the cloth and working with the seamstresses to sew the garments.
  • Conducted substantial research and made recommendations on home décor products that would be feasible for the Global Mamas future product line.
  • Provided computer basics training to a couple of women entrepreneurs who were working to apply technology to within their small businesses.
Highlights: The most memorable part of Brittany's volunteer experience was her encounters with all the women. They are the most welcoming people. Going around to all of the seamstresses and batikers, getting to know them made Brittany's experience worthwhile. She wanted to immerse herself in the culture and the women kindly opened their worlds to her.
