Vacation
Ray at a batik workshop with Mary

Description: As WIP/Global Mamas continues to grow, we have identified the need to look into strategic financial management. This includes analyzing the consolidated financial statements and key financial & operational matrics, industry benchmark, and improving pricing & margin with more accurate and efficient indirect costs allocation.

Achievements: Ray assisted WIP in many areas:
  • Reviewed 2007-2009 consolidated financial statements; consolidated 2010 Ghana vs. U.S. financial statements (Income Statement & Balance Sheet).
  • Provided key matrics trending & benchmark to global garment/apparel manufacturing & retail industries, especially in the area of Gross Margin, COGS, and Net Profit Margin.
  • Worked with WIP staff/volunteer results in an improved Indirect Costs allocation model.
  • Conducted serveral surveys with Cape Coast based Global Mamas to gather their feedback on the financial workshops that they have received back in June/July 2011; provided coaching and guidance to these Mamas on some of the business/financial issues they face, especially in the area of managing the customer orders and payment collections.
Highlights: Ray enjoyed the discussions she had with some of the Mamas in Cape Coast about how WIP/GM has positively impacted their lives. She appreciated the discussion she had with the two WIP founders about the past and future of WIP/GM, and some readings of African history & the social enterprises vs. NGO, combined. Ray feels like she has a better perspective of the complexity of challenges in Africa/Ghana and a better appreciation of the impact that NGO's like WIP/GM has in improving social and economical progress in Africa.
