Vacation
Melanie taking the batik workshop with Global Mama Mary Koomson.

Description: Global Mamas has grown from 6 independent businesses in 2003 to more than 80 independent businesses. We are directly increasing wages for more than 400 women and soon will be providing orders for a cooperative of 500 shea butter producers in northern Ghana. Our economic development model has proven to be successful and we would like to continue expanding so that we can improve the standard of living for more women and their families in more communities. For some time now Global Mamas has been thinking about transforming our model to a fair trade workshop. We are currently seeking funding to acquire land, erect a building, and invest in sewing machines, working tables, batiking equipment, stocks of calico (fabric) and dyes/chemicals/wax/etc for batiking. It will be quite an undertaking, and so we are seeking assistance to write proposals for grants to fund the launch of this Fair Trade Workshop. This is where Melanie's skills were extremely useful.

Accomplishments: Melanie assisted WIP in its fundraising plans by:
  • Completing grant applications.
  • Drafting a general grant proposal and general letter of inquiry.
  • Seeking out new funding resources.
  • Evaluating funding resources and organizing them into a spreadsheet for future use.
Highlights: Melanie enjoyed having measureable goals to complete each day, such as finishing certain grant applications. She found her project incredibly flexible and enjoyed having ample time to travel and explore on her own. She was also pleased that she overcame her phobia of eating food off of the street! Melanie also learned a lot about fundraising and business proposals.
