Description: Global Mamas has recently made the strategic decision to expand into the distribution of bulk shea butter. We have teamed up with Eugenia Akuete of Naasakle who has already made a name for her company when it comes to producing premium shea butter. She is in the midst of transforming her production model to shift all processing of the shea butter to the north of Ghana (where shea nuts grow in the wild). She has helped form a cooperative of 700 women in the village of Damango to produce the butter. Kayla conducted additional research to identify customers buying bulk shea butter as ingredients into their own products (cosmetics and possibly food.) A few years ago, Global Mamas invited Project Runway to Ghana to experience Fair Trade at its finest. Unfortunately, we did not hear back but have decided to submit proposals to other potential television shows including America's Next Top Model. Kayla produced a new proposal that will be used to pitch Global Mamas to a variety of television shows.

Accomplishments: Kayla assisted WIP in many areas:
  • Leading shea butter marketing research and the development of a marketing plan.
  • Editing of the Global Mamas shea butter websites.
  • Researching potential new customers.
  • Working on materials for volunteer recruitment and volunteer assisted PR.
  • Proposing the "Global Mamas Service Day".
Highlights: Much of Kayla's work involved market research to help Global Mamas find its way into a new market in order to sell un-refined bulk shea butter. Kayla's other main project was creating a proposal for America's Next Top Model to come to Ghana for an episode or more, with the hope to spread messages of ethical fashion and gain exposure for the Global Mamas clothing line. Additionally, she worked on the Volunteer PR kit that is used by volunteers upon their return home to potentially recruit new volunteers and spread the Global Mamas message, by creating a presentation template for them to use. Kayla also drafted a proposal for our "Global Mamas Gives Back—Kota Kraba Clean-Up" project that will happen next June. Outside of her work, Kayla formed a special bond between our favourite Chef, Eli, and her son Nii. She would visit them to watch tv shows, help Eli cook, assist Nii with his homework or just for chats.
