Volunteer
Julie, Global Mama Cindy, and Colleen at one of the Fair Trade Workshops that the students presented

Description: One aspect of the Global Mamas product line that gives it a significant competitive edge is that Global Mamas has been recognized by the Fair Trade Federation and recently by the World Fair Trade Organization in Europe for practicing fair trade principles (such as paying a fair wage for production, assistance with business growth, financial support through a raw material revolving loan fund, etc.). As the organization is recognized for practicing fair trade principles, we want to ensure the individual women owned businesses that comprise the Global Mamas Cooperative practice fair trade principles as well. The University of Indiana students: Emily Rizzo, Melissa Davis, Kelsey Schlegel, Jeffrey Erber, Julie Bowman, Midori Kudo, Nathanial Kenninger, Lance Matthews, Colleen Yu and Nicolas Perfetti were an enormous help in the office and in the producers' workshops evaluating to what degree the business owners are establishing the fair trade practices. The group planned and organized a variety of fair trade workshops and made site visits to the producers shops to access the working environment.

Accomplishments: The students assisted WIP in many areas:
  • Planning and executing a number of Fair Trade Workshops.
  • Visitingthe shops and homes of Mamas to ensure that they were practicing the 9 principles of Fair Trade.
  • Assisting in preparing for the 2011 production season by making swatches, stencils and organizing batiks.
  • Organizing and presenting workshops on time management.
Highlights: The students found it amazing to meet the women that are producing the products being sold in their small town of Bloomington, Indiana. They enjoyed witnessing the hard work that is put into each of the Global Mamas products. The experience had quite an impact on the group and it has helped them reconsider their purchasing decisions in the future. As business majors, they were able to look at the system of fair trade and see its value.
