Fran and John getting ready for a workshop with the Global Mamas in Ajumako

Description: John and Fran are no strangers to Ghana, in fact, some of the most important moments in their lives happened here. They met, fell in love and got married in Peki (Volta Region) thirty years ago during their terms as Peace Corp Volunteers. After their terms, they headed back to the United States and worked as Math teachers for the duration of their careers. Now retired, they decided to return to Ghana and help our Global Mamas with basic math education. During visits to our weaving centre in Ajumako, John and Fran worked with the Mamas on a variety of valuable skills, some of those skills have already proven to be beneficial to them including measurement and conversion. John and Fran were also able to help apprentices and workers in Cape Coast by hosting a variety of workshops.

Achievements: Fran and John assisted WIP by teaching the Mamas about the following topics:
  • Converting old cedis to new cedis.
  • Working with decimals (adding and subtracting).
  • Measurement understanding and practice.
  • Use of a calculator to compute a percentage.
  • How to compute their pay.
  • How play formats can assist teaching and build confidence
Highlights: John and Fran appreciated visiting Ajumako enough times to get to know the women and their needs. They were impressed by the weaver's determination and ability to work under difficult circumstances. During their last workshop, they presented each of the women with a binder and calculator and quickly became the most loved people in the small village.
