Description: Women in Progress is always eager to see the benefits of fair trade reach as many people as possible. Currently we are working with Eugenia Akuete who heads operations to produce the black soap and shea butter. Eugenia provides sustainable livelihoods for over 700 shea butter producers in Ghana's Northern Region. Cora worked with Eugenia to conduct research on the best path to certify Eugenia's shea butter as fair trade. In her down time with this project she was also able to turn on her creativity and develop prototype bead products for the 2010 catalog.

Accomplishments: Cora provided a variety of assistance to Women in Progress and Eugenia, including:
  • Research on the difference between two fairtrad certification schemes, FLOCERT and ECOCERT EFT.
  • Advice on which certification scheme Eugenia should choose.
  • Designs for six prototype beaded products.
  • Creation of "Meet the Women" and "Handcrafting" sections for shea butter and black soap.
Highlights: : Doing fair trade certification research in a business setting has taught Cora so much more than a class ever could, she says. She is grateful for the opportunity to have been so hands on in researching this information for Eugenia. Beyond learning so much about fair trade, Cora truly enjoyed traveling to see so many parts of Ghana and building friendships with the other volunteers.
