Vacation
Kaitlyn enjoying a fresh coconut that will be part of the Fishing Village Workshop that she helped to re-launch

Description: As part of the goals of Fair Trade, Women in Progress is always seeking volunteers to assist in the business development of both the individual clients and the organization. For Global Mamas we are constantly looking for new ways to market our products and expand our reach so that we can provide more work for more women. For the clients of the organization we continue to develop new educational tools for them to increase their knowledge of business concepts. Kaitlyn, a business student from Notre Dame, applied her knowledge to a variety of areas regarding development.

Accomplishments: Kaitlyn was able to accomplish the following:
  • Creating a comprehensive marketing strategy for Global Mamas' new line of body care products.
  • Working with residents of a Ghanaian fishing village to create a new itinerary for a tourist excursion there, which will bring much-needed funds into the village for future development.
  • Development of a public relations kit to be given to volunteers upon departure so that they can effectively spread the word about Global Mamas.
  • Editing, writing and reformatting text for the WIP Computer Training Manual that is taught to all Global Mamas clients to initiate their basic understanding of computers so that they can apply the knowledge to expanding their business.
  • Teaching the first round of classes to the clients and providing useful feedback for future teachers.
Highlights: Kaitlyn was very proud of the outcome of her projects, however, she is quick to note that becoming at home in Ghana and befriending so many wonderful Ghanaians was the greatest accomplishment of her time with Women in Progress. Though she had some frustrating moments due to unreliable computers and power outages, she was happy to have overcome the challenges and completed the tasks. One of Kaitlyn's favorite parts of her work was getting to work with such a variety of people including volunteers and Ghanaians. Outside of work accomplishments, Kaitlyn can't help but smile when she remembers her trip to the Volta region on the eastern border of Ghana. She says that she was struck by the beauty of the landscape and, more importantly, the beautiful people and culture.
