Vacation
Sarah (front right) at the wedding of Judith and Sam.

Description: As a result of the Design4Life competition sponsored by Tabeisa, WIP received a contract from UK-based clothing retailer, Topshop, to produce the winning designs. Since the dress designs were not ready for production on a larger scale, WIP needed some deep assistance in getting the patterns ready for production and ensuring the quality of the dresses being shipped to Topshop met the high expectations of other Global Mamas products.

Accomplishments: The timing of Sarah's arrival could not have been better. As a skilled designer and seamstress, Sarah took the lead in ensuring the large order for Topshop was completed on time and within the high Global Mamas quality standards. In addition to other things, Sarah helped WIP to do the following:
  • Coordinated the overall production for the large dress order with Topshop, making many site visits to the individual batikers and seamstresses to ensure we were on track to meet the deadline.
  • Made several adjustments to the winning dress patterns to ensure they were ready for mass
  • productions and getting Topshop's approval with each alteration.
  • Helped to check quality on the dresses, tag and fold the items to specification and prepare for shipment.
  • Introduced several new textile designs that are being used in the new Global Mamas catalog.
  • Spent endless hours with the seamstresses in their workshops ensuring they were cutting and assembling the more difficult dress designs for Topshop appropriately.
  • Establishing a pricing system for the wholesale beads.
Highlights: Sarah's highlight was working late with the women to get the first half of the Topshop order to Accra and then riding the bus in the middle of the night which was stressful and crazy, but worth it because the women in the office are so amazing. Her all-time favorite moments were riding in the taxi from the office back to the house when the sun was setting in the evening.
