Vacation
Emma and Eli teach Katherine and Lauren batiking basics.

Description: Although the Global Mamas apparel line has expanded over the last few years, the teen-age bracket was not well represented in the Global Mamas product line. The challenge was to come up with teen-appropriate apparel that would work for a wide variety of different body shapes and sizes, particularly when considering that there are no "fitting rooms" for internet customers. As the new Global Mamas catalog was under development as well, WIP needed new textile batik patterns that might lend itself to the new teen apparel products.

Achievements: The mother-daughters team helped to extend WIP's economic development programs to new women in the Cape Coast area and:
  • Introduced a "tube top" concept to be used for three new garments in the Global Mamas product line: blouse, skirt, and dress.
  • Worked closely with the seamstresses and WIP's quality control managers who combined expertise and imagination to perfect the design and production for each of the garments.
  • Attended a batik class where they learned the logistics of the batiking process to prepare them in developing a new textile batik design for the new catalog.
  • Created a new textile design, the "sunburst", that will be batiked in a mix of color choices for the new teen wear.
  • Helped to write new product descriptions for all new homeware and many new apparel products in preparation for a site upgrade to the online Global Mamas store.
Highlights: Although none in this mom-daughters team considered themselves "designers", they were amazed at what was accomplished in less than two weeks. They learned what it felt like to be one step in a process of very efficient, organized, and creative teamwork. After introducing some creative fashion ideas, they were excite to see it all come to fruition - ideas passed along, seamstresses putting them to fabric, quality control checking back with them on sizing and style choices, and other volunteers and office staff helping with feedback.
