Katie helps to check quality on some batik fabric to be sewn into Global Mamas products.

Description: One of the most important aspect's of WIP's mission is to maintain its status as a fair trade organization. A company's practices may be fair trade, but it must be a member of a fair trade organization or have a certification to be truly recognized as fair trade. WIP is already proudly recognized as a member of the US Fair Trade Federation. With WIP looking to expand its Global Mamas product line into the European marketplace, it is essential that it becomes certified by more international organizations. As a part of this goal, WIP was hoping to pursue a certification of fair trade practices in the UK through the International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT).

Accomplishments: Katie, in her fair trade certification project and other tasks, assisted in:
  • Compiling information on the fair trade practices and principles to be used later in educational sessions with the women.
  • Completing the draft for WIP's IFAT membership application.
  • Developing production codes to streamline the production processes and communication process among the Global Mamas producers and WIP employees.
  • Creating a new counter display for the African Spirits in the Global Mamas store and possibly to be sold to retailers in the for more effective merchandising of Global Mamas products.
  • Designing a display for the new Global Mamas pillow covers and curtains to be used in the Global Mamas store in Cape Coast.
  • Developing a map and writing directions on how to reach the home-stay family house.
  • Helping to paint the new volunteer house.
Highlights: The most memorable part of Katie's volunteer experience was working with the other staff and volunteers and collaborating on different projects. Each team came from such different backgrounds and had unique and different ideas for everything, making the projects much more interesting and diverse. She enjoyed working with other people and especially those driven towards a common mission.
