Volunteer
Antoinette teaches Mary Jane a local dance.

Description: In addition to assisting artisans in exporting Global Mamas products, WIP also assists several small women-owned businesses in the Cape Coast area to offer cultural workshop to tourists. Marketing cultural experiences through Ghana Expeditions, workshops are offered in batiking, Ghanaian cuisine, drumming and dancing, and a fishing village excursion. Through these workshops WIP hopes to enable tourists to immerse themselves in Ghanaian culture through hands-on instruction by talented Ghanaians.

Achievements: With Mary Jane's extensive background in music education, she:
  • Spent three weeks learning Ghanaian drumming dancing through the teachings of Antoinette Adwoa Kudoto, the only female master drummer in Ghana.
  • Helped Antoinette find ways of making her drumming and dancing workshops offered by WIP more successful.
  • Developed a business plan to help Antoinette grow her two retail shops and find more markets for her drums and products.
  • Taught Antoinette how to research and apply for funding and grants.
  • Researched ways to better promote her youth organization that helps underprivileged children in Cape Coast to learn drumming and dancing.
  • Established a plan for helping Antoinette travel to the US to expand her teaching possibilities.
Highlights: Mary Jane was overwhelmed by her entire experience, but her greatest memory was meeting the people. She was honored to be invited to Antoinette's for dinner and Antoinette's openness in sharing her knowledge and being open to her suggestions. Mary Jane feels she has lived the statement 'Music is the Universal language.'
