Description:
Although Cape Coast is a major tourist destination in Ghana, visitors tend to either pass through briefly or as they visit the castles. Women in Progress began working with several women entrepreneurs to create more activities in Cape Coast in order to generate more income for women. Marne worked with several micro enterprises to define, market, and implement activities for tourists. In addition, Marne assisted WIP with its own marketing and PR.
Accomplishments:
Marne enabled several women entrepreneurs in Ghana to generate additional income for their businesses through expanding their businesses to include tourist activities:
- Assisted Eli-Emma Batik & Tye-Dye in developing a half-day batiking workshop for tourists.
- Helped Antoinette Drumming & Dancing to condense a month-long drumming and dancing workshop into a half-day tourist workshop.
- Set the stage for a young woman to offer fishing village excursions to tourist.
- Designed and distributed flyers advertising each new workshop.
- Created content to market the tourist workshops on the Internet.
- Expanded WIP's website to include Volunteer Highlights.
Highlights:
Marne noticed a big change in the women as they became more proficient, more organized and more self-assured that they are able to work with tourists. Marne's highlight was when the women showed just how happy her work has made them. Elizabeth, co-owner of Eli-Emma, said "I never could have imagined that someday we would be having this business and tourists would come here to see us!"
