Vacation
Kaitlin hanging out with the kids from the Cape Coast Café.

Description: Although WIP has come a long way in demonstrating how one can earn a great wage through hard work, WIP wanted to present supporting data that would help the Global Mamas members understand how this approach, rather than aid, helps reduce poverty at the grassroots level.

Accomplishments: Kaitlin undertook many tasks to assist WIP, including the following:
  • Conducting focus groups with junior and senior batikers to understand their thoughts about their payments.
  • Interviewing many Global Mamas on production demand and the hours spent working.
  • Developing a training program focused on costs associated with movement of goods.
  • Assisting WIP staff when shipping deadlines were tight with tagging and sorting products for packing.
  • Assisting WIP staff in quality control – checking and grading items for export.
Highlights: Working for an organization that has made a difference in the lives of others was one of the major highlights of her internship. She also loved living with the Kwaw family and having the shopkeepers she visited everyday yell greetings to her as she walked down the street.
