Description:
Global Mamas has been recognized by the Fair Trade Federation in the US and by the World Fair Trade Organization in Europe for practicing fair trade principles. Now that the product line as a whole is recognized for practicing fair trade principles, we want to evaluate to what degree the business owners of the women owned businesses that comprise the Global Mamas Cooperative practice them. We continuously work to ensure the Global Mamas Fair Trade Certification program goes on in the future and is implemented in all of our locations. The Fair Trade Certification is a very comprehensive process that includes interviews, assistance with business growth, book keeping and computer training, among others.
Accomplishments:
Ekaette, with a remarkable enthusiasm and work ethic, was able to complete the following projects: - Interview members of the Global Mamas Cooperative to assess their initial level of commitment to standard Fair Trade principles. Update the interview questions to ensure they are easily understood by the women.
- Carry out one-on-one training sessions with the women regarding Fair Trade principles.
- Provide bookkeeping and computer training.
- Create an action plan for each business as to what they are doing well and which areas they need improvement.
- Conduct research on potential customers for our newly created pet line.
- Present a Fair Trade Workshop for the new women in the program that had not yet started the certification process.
Highlights:
Born in Nigeria, Ekaette melted with the Ghanaian culture from the first moment. She enjoyed cooking Ghanaian food, and it was a pleasure for her to easily get local ingredients that are so difficult to find in the US. She communicated really well with the women and made the interview sessions interactive and easy for them to understand. The most satisfying part of her volunteer experience was getting the women to smile during an interview and making lifelong friends; members of parliaments, chiefs and professors among others.
