Description: WIP facilitates the production of new products among many women entrepreneurs in Ghana under the brand name Global Mamas. Every year we work with design volunteers and interns to create the following year's new line. It is a long and intricate process that involves many steps: learning the method of batik and developing new stamp designs based on the limitations of the batiking process, creating product specifications to ensure products are made consistently and with high quality, working with the women to develop new samples, etc. This summer WIP had the opportunity to work with a group of design interns who worked as a group and individually to get this process started, and the outcome has been so amazing!

Accomplishments: Hillary participated in the development of the 2011 product line assisting in the following areas:
  • Conducting sizing test for existing products.
  • Creating a group presentation on trend forecasting and potential new stamps.
  • Proposing new designs for Global Mamas women's accessories and jewelry product lines.
  • Analyzing production capacity of producers to determine and try to balance areas where there is more capacity with those that are working beyond their capacity.
  • Developing a template for the 2011 product specifications.
 Highlights: Hillary wasn't expecting to be given full responsibility and freedom as a designer. She says she came to Ghana to work and she got exactly what she asked for. She really enjoyed being allowed to explore the full creative process all the way through; watching the samples come in was by far the most exciting part of her work because she got to watch what she created come to life. She also enjoyed the people she worked with; the design team worked very well together and had a great chemistry.
