Description:
WIP facilitates the production of new products among many women entrepreneurs in Ghana under the brand name Global Mamas. Every year we work with design volunteers and interns to create the following year's new line. It is a long and intricate process that involves many steps: learning the method of batik and developing new stamp designs based on the limitations of the batiking process, creating product specifications to ensure products are made consistently and with high quality, working with the women to develop new samples, etc. This summer WIP had the opportunity to work with a group of design interns who worked as a group and individually to get this process started, and the outcome has been so amazing!
Accomplishments:
Ellen participated in the creation of the 2011 year catalog working in the following areas: - Conducting sizing tests for the existing products.
- Working with quality control to provide suggestions that can strengthen the quality control process.
- Developing a group presentation on trend forecasting and proposed new designs for women's and children's products
- Drafting patterns of the designs chosen for sampling.
- Redesigning stuffed ornaments and train women on their production to ensure they meet the Global Mamas quality standards.
Highlights:
Ellen really enjoyed the amount of responsibility designers were given for the development of new projects and the amount of input she was able to give to the 2011 product line. Working with the batikers on the new designs was the most satisfying part of her experience here, it was very rewarding. She worked diligently on getting the women to follow the patterns drafted by the designers.
